Cator, Ruma & Associates provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology design and contract administration for the Colorado School of Mines new residence hall. 

Spruce Hall consists of individual and double residences that have access to large common restrooms. The first floor contains common spaces, including food service, laundry, exercise, and gathering areas for studying and socializing. The building has multiple wings in order to limit the height of the structure.

Site utilities for the campus system include steam, condensate, domestic water/fire water, electrical, and natural gas. A rooftop unit is utilized for the common areas, while individual fan coil units serve each residence. Campus steam is utilized for heating water and domestic hot water. Infrastructure was designed to serve a future commercial kitchen.

New electrical service was provided that will tie into the existing 13.2KV campus loop. Site lighting was provided to blend different night lighting areas, including a residential neighborhood on one side and a plaza on the other side, creating a safe place for students to traverse, relax and live. A new on-site generator providing emergency backup for elevators and designated emergency egress lighting will be designed.

Coordination was provided for the relocation of the existing Weaver Hall generator in order to better serve both buildings. All lighting was designed to meet the 2015 IECC section C406.3 code, targeting a minimum of 90% of the watts per square foot allowed in the 2015 IECC section C405.2 code. The lighting design also still meets the IES recommended foot candle levels.
