The Centura Porter Adventist Hospital Phase 1A Master Plan project is comprised of approximately 37,000 square feet of functional remodel and infrastructure improvements for the nearly 90-year-old hospital. Functional remodel areas included the addition four new operating rooms and support spaces including surgical locker rooms, Café and Dining room, Physicians Lounge, Health Information Management, Medical Library, Oncology Nurses Station, Lab and Morgue/Cadaver Lab. A temporary Servery and Kitchen were designed as well to keep services open during renovation.

Infrastructure improvements included replacement of electrical switchgear and transfer switches at the Central Utility Plant and North Wing, new normal and emergency electrical services/rooms serving Radiology, replacement of the air handler and grease exhaust systems serving Café, Dining, and the Kitchen, new air handler to serve Surgergy, new DDC controls, new chilled water pumps, new chilled water and domestic water piping mains, new medical air compressors and a new fire pump. The remodel work also necessitated relocation of large ductwork mains in many locations to provide adequate ceiling heights, particularly in Surgery where pre-fabricated OR ceilings were employed.

It is noteworthy that this multi-phased construction project is being completed all while maintaining an operational hospital with a low floor-to-floor height of 12’-4”. This effort required close coordination between the design team, owner and contractors to develop phasing and contingency plans to maintain ceiling heights and normal hospital operations, but most importantly create minimal impacts to the patient experience. Several hundred MOP’s have been generated and reviewed during the course of the project.
