Project description
Cator, Ruma & Associates provided comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology engineering services for the multi-year phased renovation of Lake Hazel Middle School in Meridian, Idaho. Spanning Phases 1 through 5 from 2023 through 2027, the project transformed more than 120,000 square feet of learning, administrative, and support spaces while the school remained operational.
The modernization began with targeted classroom conversions and expanded into a campus-wide systems upgrade that included a 48,000 SF academic and gym renovation, science and library modernization, technology backbone reconfiguration, and full replacement of legacy HVAC infrastructure. Throughout the phased implementation, CRA developed coordinated Revit-based construction documents, issued multiple bid packages and early equipment procurement packages, and provided construction administration services aligned with each construction sequence.
By the final phase, the project completed the removal of existing boilers and water source heat pumps, redesigned the main mechanical room, and fully transitioned the campus to a modern rooftop unit and DDC-controlled HVAC strategy. Electrical upgrades strengthened primary and secondary distribution, lighting systems were modernized to comply with IECC, and short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies supported system reliability. Technology infrastructure was expanded and reorganized, including MDF relocation, structured cabling upgrades, security system expansion, and integration of paging, surveillance, and wireless systems. The result is a cohesive, resilient, and future-ready middle school environment delivered through disciplined master planning and phased execution.
