Case Study :
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Health Sciences Building

391,000ft²

The seven-story high-rise building includes spaces for the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, Behavioral Health, the Colorado Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute, the Simulation Educational HUB, clinical faculty offices, research faculty offices, a data center, and auxiliary functions. Specialty spaces include general laboratories, a pharmacy, conference spaces, a vivarium, and an atrium with smoke control.

The mechanical and electrical design optimized energy performance while maintaining safety for the occupants and operators. Design for the infrastructure of a 5,000-square-foot data center was included. The MEP systems and strategy leveraged the data center’s unique characteristics in the overall building energy reduction goals.

Electrical power design supports the occupant-required equipment and general and specific power requirements. Backup power was provided to meet code requirements and ensure occupant safety during utility power outages. Lighting design for all interior spaces within the building, along with the limited site layout, was included.

Underground plumbing design for the fixtures and spaces required in the Vivarium was provided, including design of all necessary waste piping for fixtures and equipment.
