Electrical

Electrical
Systems That Perform.
Facilities That Last.

Hospitals, data centers, and other critical environments require reliable power systems with minimal downtime. Whether it is damage to critical electrical infrastructure from faults, nuisance tripping from ground faults and poorly coordinated circuit breakers, or the possibility of having to work on energized equipment, safety and reliability can be maximized by having our team of engineers provide short circuit analysis, coordination studies, and arc flash hazard analysis on your electrical distribution system. Cator, Ruma & Associates uses SKM PowerTools™ to analyze and fine-tune your electrical system to ensure safety and reliability.

Service Offerings
Proven Success of Electrical Services

Electrical Distribution Systems

We design the building’s electrical distribution system to comply with NEC and IECC requirements while also meeting the building Owner’s needs.

Generator and Emergency Power Distribution Systems

We design generator and emergency power distribution systems to meet applicable Code requirements and the needs of the building and its Owner, providing backup power to the necessary building systems and components.

Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Battery Backup Systems

When required, we design uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to provide backup power and/or power conditioning for sensitive loads in data centers, 911 dispatch centers, emergency operations centers, and other facilities.

Medium Voltage and Low Voltage Power Systems

Medium voltage comes with a unique set of requirements and design considerations that we are well equipped to guide you through. Whether it is just a medium voltage transformer that you will own or a full medium voltage backup generator system that serves your campus; we are here to provide the expertise needed to do it right the first time.

Interior and Exterior Lighting

We design interior and exterior lighting systems to meet or exceed applicable code requirements for lighting power density allowances and system controllability. The design of this lighting system is verified through photometric analysis to meet lighting standards for individual spaces or area types.

Lighting Control Systems

We design lighting and lighting control systems to meet the requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code. We strive to design a cost-effective system that is easy to maintain and operate, while also providing Users with control flexibility.

Fire Alarm Systems

We provide a performance specification for the fire alarm system that specifies the types and locations of the control panel, notification devices, and initiation devices throughout the building.

Short Circuit Analysis

We model your power system in SKM PowerTools’™ to determine the maximum available fault current at any point in your electrical distribution system to validate that all equipment has adequate Ampere Interrupting Capacity (AIC) ratings to safely contain faults.

System Coordination Studies

We analyze the time-current curves of the circuit breakers in your electrical distribution system using SKM PowerTools™ and recommend device settings to optimize device-to-device coordination, limiting faults and nuisance tripping to the lowest possible level to contain and minimize outages.

Arc Flash Hazard Evaluation

We use the arc flash hazard module in SKM PowerTools™ to calculate available arc energy throughout your electrical distribution system, based on NFPA 70E calculations and information from the short-circuit analysis and coordination study. We can generate labels for your electrical distribution equipment that indicate the available arc energy, enabling the determination of the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) level for safe work on the equipment. At the same time, it is energized, if needed.
